Let’s talk cards while on holiday. Should you take your credit card? Or, should you take your Halifax or Natwest current account cards instead? No, sign up for and take your Monzo card.

Don’t get me wrong I often carry some cash in the local currency for taxis or tipping depending on where we are going. However, I also always take my debit card with the majority of my trip money on. I previously used my everyday debit card such as Natwest or Barclays but that incurred charges when using outside of the UK. However now we carry a Monzo card and here’s why:

  • No fees on transactions outside of the UK.
  • Easy to see cost with instant notifications of transactions on your mobile. This is also useful if you haven’t realised you have lost your card, as you will get a notification if someone was to have used it.
  • You can withdraw up to £200 per day with no charges.
  • Easy to block the card if lost.

We love our Monzo card for travelling as it makes it so much easier. Monzo supports savings pots, which means you can separate funds in your current account into different savings pots, and it also allows you to set your card to spend from one of these savings pots. This is useful for if you have been saving for the holiday into a pot. You can set your spending to that pot so that you can ensure you only spend the amount you saved rather than extra.
